Management and artistic direction

Prof. PhD. Mag.art. Werner HACKL

If Vienna is, as they say, the world capital of music, then the University of Music in  Vienna is considered the most outstanding place to study. Werner Hackl has the great privilege of living and studying in Vienna and drawing his knowledge from this world-famous environment.

Born in Krems on Danube, Austria, Hackl first joined the boys’ choir and learned piano and trombone at music school. He then studied trombone at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna, graduating with a master’s degree and finally receiving a doctorate in philosophy. In his doctoral thesis he researched music in Vienna from the monarchy to Austria’s accession to the European Union. He served with the Guard music in Vienna for four years and then became a member of the NOe.Tonkuenstler Orchestra. At the same time he taught brass ensemble as a professor at the Vienna University of Music.

Hackl studied at the Pedagogical Academy, which is why teaching plays an important role in his life. He teaches throughout his life, not just because it is necessary for his livelihood, but because it brings him genuine joy. It is a challenge for him to pass on his knowledge of the art of the great masters and their music to his students and to convey works to them with the greatest care. He does not see his task in the stereotypical exercise of rigid control systems, but rather in developing individual solution options together with the students and using the methodology of practice-oriented learning through action. As president of the Austrian Society for New Music, he organizes workshops and concerts.

As head of the wind ensemble and conductor of the ‘ArtistOrchestraVienna’ as well as bandmaster of the ‘Original Kaiserjaeger’, he tours through many countries around the world, including Europe, the USA, South America and Asia. For many years he has the privilege of teaching and conducting concerts as a music educator in China. As artistic vice president of the ‘World Orchestra Festival Vienna’, he annually presents the musical elite in the Golden Hall of the Vienna Music Association. Professor Hackl was honored by the Austrian Federal President for his outstanding musical achievements. For the musician, educator, ensemble leader and conductor, music includes his life.
