Der Messias ist ein Oratorium von Georg Friedrich Händel auf Bibeltexte für vier Soli (SATB), Chor und Orchester. Es vertont die christliche Glaubenslehre bezüglich des Messias auf Basis der Bibel und des Book of Common Prayer. Das Oratorium wurde im Sommer 1741 komponiert und  ein Jahr später in Dublin uraufgeführt. Das Werk gehört bis heute zu den populärsten Beispielen geistlicher Musik des christlichen Abendlandes. Der berühmteste Satz des Oratoriums ist das Halleluja, das den zweiten der drei Teile beschließt. Die Legende sagt, dass beim ersten Hören des Chors König Georg II. so ergriffen war, dass er aufsprang, was alle anderen dazu veranlasste, seinem Beispiel zu folgen.

Messiah is an oratorio by Georg Friedrich Handel based on Bible texts for four solos (SATB), choir and orchestra. It sets the Christian doctrine of the Messiah to music based on the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer. The oratorio was composed in the summer of 1741 and premiered in Dublin a year later. The work is still one of the most popular examples of sacred music in the Christian West. The most famous movement of the oratorio is the Hallelujah, which closes the second of the three parts. Legend has it that when the choir was first heard, King George II was so moved that he jumped up, prompting everyone else to follow his example.
