Josef Strauss (1827-1870) Feuerfest! Polka francaise, op.269 / Fire Proof!
Die Polka francaise „Feuerfest !“ ist zum ersten Malü am 13. März 1869 bei einem Betriebsfest in den reich geschmückten Blumensälen der Gartenbaugesellschaft an der Wiener Ringstraße erklungen. Die gesamte Belegschaft der Firma Franz von Wertheim war an diesem Abend ver- sammelt. Anlass des Festes war die Produktion der 20.000 „Wertheim-Kassen“, deren Eigen- schaft es war, dass sie feuerfest war und jedem Brand ohne Beschädigung des Inhaltes stand- halten konnte. Das wurde auch vorgeführt: Kassen wurden auf Scheiterhaufen gestellt, die spektakulär angezündet wurden. „Feuerfest“ war die Werbebotschaft der Firma und „Feuerfest!“ hieß nun auch die Polka, die Josef Strauss bei dieser Gelegenheit aufführte. In dem populären Werk erklingen die mit kräftigen Schlägen geführten Schmiedehämmer einer längst versunke- nen Epoche immer noch nach.
The polka francaise „Fire Proof !” was heard for the first time on March 13, 1869 at a company party in the richly decorated flower halls of the Horticultural Society on Vienna’s Ringstrasse. The entire workforce of the Franz von Wertheim company was gathered that evening. The occa- sion of the festival was the production of the 20,000 „Wertheim cash registers”, the property of which was that they were fireproof and could withstand any fire without damaging their contents. This was also demonstrated: cash registers were placed on stake, which were set on spectacu- larly. „Fire-proof” was the company’s advertising message and „Fire-proof!” Was the name of the polka that Josef Strauss performed on this occasion. In this popular work, the blacksmith’s hammers, which are wielded with powerful blows, still resound from a long forgotten era.
