Andrea Gabrieli trat 1566 seine Stelle als erster Organist an San Marco an, einer herausragenden Position in der Musikwelt Italiens, wo er bis zu seinem Lebensende blieb. An San Marco entwi- ckelte er, gefördert durch die einzigartige Akustik des Doms, seinen originalen Kompositionsstil der zeremoniellen Mehrchörigkeit und des konzertanten Stils, der später von seinem Neffen Giovanni Gabrieli weiterentwickelt wurde. Zu seinen Aufgaben gehörten Kompositionen von Fest- musiken zu verschiedenen Anlässen, so beispielsweise „Alla Battaglia“ aus Concerti 1587. Andrea Gabrieli war einer der angesehensten Komponisten in der 2. Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts und ein äußerst produktiver Komponist, eine Eigenschaft, die er mit Orlando di Lasso gemeinsam hatte. Zu seinen Schülern gehörten neben seinem Neffen Giovanni noch der Komponist Hans Leo Haß- ler, der dann seinen konzertanten Stil nach Deutschland trug. Alla Battaglia, ein musikalisches Schlachtengemälde mit zahlreichen Instrumentaleffekten, ist eine Programmmusik und stellt den Kampf konkurrierender Armeen musikalisch dar.
Andrea Gabrieli took up his position as principal organist at San Marco in 1566, a position of pre- eminence in the musical world of Italy, where he remained until the end of his life. Encouraged by the unique acoustics of the cathedral, he developed his original compositional style of ceremonial polyphony and the concertante style at San Marco, which was later further developed by his nephew Giovanni Gabrieli. His duties included composing festive music for various occasions, such as “Alla Battaglia” from Concerti 1587. Andrea Gabrieli was one of the most respected com- posers of the second half of the 16th century and a prolific composer, a quality he shared Orlando di Lasso had in common. In addition to his nephew Giovanni, his students also included the com- poser Hans Leo Hassler, who then took his concertante style to Germany. Alla Battaglia, a musical battle painting with numerous instrumental effects, is program music and musically depicts the struggle of competing armies.
