Charles François Gounod, geboren in Paris, gestorben in Saint-Cloud, war ein französischer Komponist. Gounod war Kirchenkapellmeister, Chorleiter und Organist in Paris. Später wandte er sich stärker der Opernkomposition zu. Zu seinen bekanntesten Werken zählt die Oper Faust, die in Deutschland manchmal auch unter dem Titel Margarethe aufgeführt wird.
Sehr bekannt ist seine Méditation sur le 1er prélude de Bach, eine Melodie, die er 1852 auf das Präludium C-Dur des 1. Teils des Wohltemperierten Klaviers von Johann Sebastian Bach für Violine und Klavier schrieb und 1859 mit dem Text des Ave Maria unterlegte. Dieses Ave Maria von Bach / Gounodgilt weltweit als eines der populärsten Stücke der klassischen Musik überhaupt.
Charles François Gounod, born in Paris, died in Saint-Cloud, was a French composer. Gounod was a church conductor, choir director and organist in Paris. Later he turned more to opera composition. One of his best-known works is the opera Faust, which is sometimes performed in Germany under the title Margarethe.
His Méditation sur le 1er prelude de Bach is well known, a melody he wrote for violin and piano in 1852 from the Prelude in C major of the first part of the Well-Tempered Clavier by Johann Sebastian Bach and in 1859 with the text of the Ave Maria underlaid. This Ave Maria von Bach / Gounod is considered to be one of the most popular pieces of classical music around the world.
