Ave verum corpus ist eine Motette von Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart für vierstimmigen gemischten Chor, Streicher und Orgel. Dies ist die berühmteste Vertonung des mittelalterlichen Hymnus Ave verum natum de Maria Virgine und trotz seiner Kürze eines der bekanntesten Werke Mozarts. „Gruß dir, Leib des Herrn, geboren aus Marias reinem Schoß!“ Mozart komponierte sein Ave verum ein knappes halbes Jahr vor seinem Tod, während er zugleich an der Zauberflöte und dem Requiem arbeitete. Das Werk – das Autograph ist auf den 17. Juni 1791 datiert – entstand wahrscheinlich zum Fronleichnams-Gottesdienst für Anton Stoll, Schullehrer und Chorregent der Pfarrkirche St. Stephan in Baden bei Wien, mit dem Mozart befreundet war.
Ave verum corpus is a motet by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart for four-part mixed choir, strings and organ. This is the most famous setting of the medieval hymn Ave verum natum de Maria Virgine and, despite its brevity, one of Mozart’s most famous works. “Greetings, Body of the Lord, born of Maria’s clean womb!” Mozart composed his Ave verum almost six months before his death while he was working on the Magic Flute and the Requiem at the same time. The work – the autograph is dated June 17, 1791 – was probably created for the Corpus Christi service for Anton Stoll, school teacher and choir regent of the parish church of St. Stephan in Baden near Vienna, with whom Mozart was friends.
