Mendelssohn Bartholdy war ein Enkel des jüdischen Philosophen Moses Mendelssohn, wurde aber christlich erzogen und galt als Mittler zwischen den Religionen. Erwähnenswert ist, dass Mendelssohn in nahezu allen musikalischen Disziplinen tätig war. Er schuf Sinfonien, Instrumentalkonzerte, Ouvertüren, Opern, Singspiele, Oratorien und Schauspielmusik, um nur einige zu nennen. Seine Orgelwerke stellen die bedeutendsten Kompositionen für Orgel seit den Werken J. S. Bachs dar.
Psalmtexte inspirierten Mendelssohn während seines ganzen Schaffens. Der Psalm 95 – vertont 1838 – thematisiert das segensreiche Handeln Gottes an den Menschen, er ist ein Hymnus der Gemeinde zu Ehren Gottes: “1 Kommt, lasst uns dem Herrn zujubeln! Wir wollen ihn preisen, den Fels, bei dem wir Rettung finden! 2 Lasst uns dankbar zu ihm kommen und ihn mit fröhlichen Liedern besingen! 3 Denn der Herr ist ein großer Gott…“
Unser Arrangement reduziert den Schluss-Canon dieses Chor- und Orchesterwerkes auf Orgel, Trompete und Posaune. Mit einer Aufführung auch ohne Chor kann man das Feuer von Mendelssohns Genius stark fühlen.
Mendelssohn Bartholdy was a grandson of the Jewish philosopher Moses Mendelssohn, but was raised as a Christian and was considered a mediator between religions. It is worth mentioning that Mendelssohn was active in almost every musical discipline. He created symphonies, instrumental concertos, overtures, operas, singspiels, oratorios and incidental music, to name but a few. His organ works represent the most important compositions for organ since the works of J.S. Bach. Psalm texts inspired Mendelssohn throughout his career. Psalm 95 – set to music in 1838 – deals with God’s beneficial dealings with people, it is a hymn of the congregation in honor of God: “1 Come, let us cheer for the Lord! Let us praise him, the rock by which we find salvation! 2 Let us come to him in gratitude and sing joyful songs to him. 3 For the Lord is a great God…”
Our arrangement reduces the final canon of this choral and orchestral work to organ, trumpet and trombone. With a performance, even without a choir, one can strongly feel the fire of Mendelssohn’s genius.
