Conradin Kreutzer (*bei Meßkirch – † in Riga), deutscher Musiker, Dirigent und Komponist war Vertreter der Frühromantik und des Biedermeier. Während seiner Schulzeit hatte er neben Klavier und Orgel auch Klarinette, Oboe und Violine zu spielen gelernt und wurde auch in Gesang und Musiktheorie unterrichtet. 1804 zog er nach Wien, wo er Kompositionsschüler von J. G. Albrechtsberger wurde. Nachdem er als Klaviervirtuose durch Europa reiste, trat er die Stelle eines Hofkapellmeisters in Stuttgart an. Danach kurzzeitig Kapellmeister am Hoftheater Donaueschingen, erhielt er 1822 die Stelle eines Kapellmeisters am Kärntnertortheater in Wien. 1833 bis 1836 wechselte er an das Theater in der Josefstadt. In diese Zeit fallen seine wichtigsten musikdramatischen Produktionen wie Das Nachtlager in Granada und die Musik zu F. Raimunds Der Verschwender. Anschließend ging Kreutzer an das Kärntnertortheater zurück, wo er nicht nur eigene Werke herausbrachte, sondern das ganze internationale Repertoire einstudierte.1840 verließ Kreutzer Wien. Nachdem er bis 1842 städtischer Musikdirektor zu Köln war, begleitete er seine Tochter, die Sopranistin Cäcilie, auf deren Gastspielreisen. Kreutzers Schaffen erstreckte sich auch auf kammermusikalische Werke, wie das vorliegende Duo. Als einer der Beliebtesten seiner Zeit verstand er, die Melodik des italienischen Stils mit französischer Eleganz und deutscher Kraft zu vereinen. Das Duo ist zu spielen mit 2 Klarinetten oder in Besetzung von Oboe mit Klarinette.

During his school days, he learned to play the piano and organ as well as the clarinet, oboe and violin and was also taught singing and music theory. In 1804 he moved to Vienna, where he became a composition student of J. G. Albrechtsberger. After traveling through Europe as a piano virtuoso, he took up the position of court conductor in Stuttgart. Afterwards he was briefly conductor at the Court Theater Donaueschingen, and in 1822 he was given the position of conductor at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna. From 1833 to 1836 he moved to the Theater in der Josefstadt. His most important music-dramatic productions such as The Night Camp in Granada and the music for F. Raimund’s The Spendthurt fall during this time. Kreutzer then went back to the Kärntnertortheater, where he not only published his own works, but also rehearsed the entire international repertoire. In 1840, Kreutzer left Vienna. After he was Cologne’s city music director until 1842, he accompanied his daughter, the soprano Cäcilie, on her guest tours. Kreutzer’s work also extended to chamber music works, such as the present duo. As one of the most popular of his time, he knew how to combine the melodies of the Italian style with French elegance and German power. The duo can be played with 2 clarinets or with oboe and clarinet.
