Julius Fucik (1872-1916) Einzug der Gladiatoren / Thunder & Blazes, op.68, March
Fučík schrieb den Marsch 1899 in Sarajevo, wo er als Militärkapellmeister der österreich-ungarischen Armee stationiert war. Der Triumphmarsch „Entrance of the Gladiators“ (oder tschechisch „Vjezd gladiátorů“) kam über den Umweg der Vereinigten Staaten nach Europa zurück, wo er meist parodistisch als Zirkusmarsch gebraucht wird. Ursprünglich nannte Fučík das Stück Grande Marche Chromatique, womit der damals neuesten Stand der Spieltechnik und Bauweise von Blechblasinstrumenten demonstriert wird, die in allen Instrumenten und Lagen schnelle und ebenmäßige chromatische Gänge erlauben. Bekannt ist vor allem der erste Teil nach einer kurzen, pathetischen Introduktion, in dem die Trompeten das bekannte Motiv spielen. Der zweite Teil wird von chromatischen Figuren im Bass dominiert. Der dritte Teil ist ein langsames Trio, das in weiterer Folge triumphal endet. Das vorliegende verkürzte Arrangement ist für Brass-Quintet gesetzt und klingt mit Hinzufügung von 3.Trompete, 2.Horn und Schlagzeug fulminanter.
Fučík wrote the march in 1899 in Sarajevo, where he was stationed as a military bandmaster in the Austro-Hungarian army. The triumphal march “Entrance of the Gladiators” (or in Czech “Vjezd gladiátorů”) returned to Europe via a detour from the United States, where it is usually used parodically as a circus march. Fučík originally called the piece Grande Marche Chromatique, demonstrating the then state-of-the-art playing technique and construction of brass instruments, which allow for fast and even chromatic movements in all instruments and positions. What is particularly well known is the first part after a short, pathetic introduction, in which the trumpets play the well-known motif. The second part is dominated by chromatic figures in the bass. The third part is a slow trio that ends triumphantly. This shortened arrangement is set for brass quintet and sounds more brilliant with the addition of 3rd trumpet, 2nd horn and drums.
