EUROPAHYMNE / The European Anthem (L v. Beethoven)
Die Europahymne ist die Hymne der Europäischen Union und eines der offiziellen Symbole der EU. Die Hymne ist eine Instrumentalfassung des Hauptthemas Ode an die Freude aus dem letzten Satz der neunten Sinfonie Ludwig van Beethovens. Der Europarat nahm am 19. Januar 1972 die Melodie als eigene Hymne an und beauftragte den Dirigenten Herbert von Karajan mit dem Arrangement dreier Versionen: einer Solopiano-Version sowie je einer Orchester-Fassung für Blas- und für Sinfonieorchester. 1985 wurde die Instrumentalversion von den Staats- und Regierungschefs der Europäischen Gemeinschaften als offizielle Hymne der EG angenommen. Sie ersetzt nicht die Nationalhymnen der Mitgliedstaaten.
The European Anthem is the anthem of the European Union and one of the official symbols of the EU. The hymn is an instrumental version of the main theme Ode to Joy from the last movement of Ludwig van Beethoven’s ninth symphony. On January 19, 1972, the Council of Europe adopted the melody as its own hymn and commissioned the conductor Herbert von Karajan to arrange three versions: a solo piano version and an orchestral version each for wind and symphonic orchestra. In 1985 the instrumental version was adopted by the heads of state and government of the European Communities as the official anthem of the EC. It does not replace the national anthems of the member states.
