Richard Strauss (1864-1949) Festmusik der Stadt Wien, o.Op. AV.133 for 19 brass and timpani
Der spätromantischer Komponist Richard Strauss ist vor allem für seine orchestrale Tondichtungen, sein Liedschaffen und seine Opern bekannt, hat aber auch einige Märsche und Fanfaren (Fanfare der Stadt Wien, Feierlicher Einzug der Ritter des Johanniter-Ordens, Wiener Philharmoniker Fanfare…) komponiert. Richard Strauss hat die zweichörige Festmusik der Stadt Wien auf Bitten des Trompeterchores der Stadt Wien verfasst. Sie ist dem Gemeinderat der Stadt Wien als Dankesgabe für die Verleihung des Beethoven-Preises der Stadt Wien (1942) gewidmet. Die Originalbesetzung sieht im Ersten Chor fünf Trompeten in B und je eine Alt-, Tenor-, Baßposaune und Baßtuba und ich Zweiten Chor wiederum fünf Trompeten in B, eine Alt-, zwei Tenor-, eine Baßposaune und Baßtuba sowie 5 Pauken vor. Die Uraufführung der 14-minütigen Festmusik fand am 9. April 1943 durch den Trompeterchor der Stadt Wien unter der Leitung von Richard Strauss im großen Festsaal des Wiener Rathauses statt. Unter der Leitung von Werner Hackl erklang das prächtige Werk durch Mitglieder des NÖ Tonkünstlerorchesters und dem Blechbläserensemble der Wiener Musikhochschule im Großen Sendesaal des ORF in Wien.
The late romantic composer Richard Strauss is best known for his orchestral tone poems, his songs and his operas, but he also composed a few marches and fanfares (fanfare of the city of Vienna, ceremonial entry of the Knights of the Order of St. John, Vienna Philharmonic fanfare… ). Richard Strauss wrote the two-choir Festival Music for the City of Vienna at the request of the trumpeter choir of the city of Vienna. It is dedicated to the Municipal Council of the City of Vienna as a gift of thanks for the award of the Beethoven Prize of the City of Vienna (1942). The original instrumentation provides for five trumpets in Bb and one each alto-, tenor-, bass-trombone and bass-tuba in the first choir and five trumpets in Bb, one alto-, two tenor-, one bass-trombone and bass-tuba in the second choir as well as 5 timpanis. The first performance of the 14-minute festival music took place on April 9, 1943 by the trumpeter choir of the City of Vienna under the direction of Richard Strauss in the large banquet hall of the Vienna City Hall. Under the direction of Werner Hackl, the magnificent work was performed by members of the Lower Austrian Tonkünstler Orchestra and the Brassensemble of the Vienna University of Music in the large broadcasting hall of the ORF in Vienna.
