Anfang der 1570er Jahre konnte er sich in Florenz ganz der Musik widmen. Er war Mitglied der Florentiner Camerata, einer Gruppe, die sich die Wiederbelebung antiker Vorbilder zum Ziel gesetzt hatte. Die durch seinen Vater geknüpfte Verbindung von Theorie und Experiment auf dem Gebiet der Musik war von Einfluss auf die Entwicklung Galileo Galileis als Physiker, es ist auch vermutet worden, dass der junge Galilei seinen Vater bei den Experimenten unterstützte.
