Johann Strauss II (1825-1899) Künstler-Artist Quadrille op.201
Es entsprach der Tradition der Zeit, dass symphonische Musik auch für die Unterhaltung verwendet wurde und so arrangierte Johann Strauss seine Künstler-Quadrille zum Künstlerball am 2. Februar 1858 im Wiener Sophiensaal mit Motiven aus Werken, die in der laufenden Saison in der Oper und im Konzertsaal zu hören gewesen waren. Es gab Kritik: “Dieses Tonstück hatte den Eindruck einer künstlerischen Blasphemie ausgeübt… eine gewisse Grenze muß es geben, bis zu der man im Scherze gehen kann…denen kein wahrhaft künstlerisch Gesitteter…ohne Ehrfurcht nahen darf.”
Dennoch ist diese Künstler-Quadrille nach Motiven berühmter Meister amüsant und originell.
It was in line with the tradition of the time that symphonic music was also used for entertainment, and so Johann Strauss arranged his Artists’ Quadrille for the artists’ ball on February 2, 1858 in Vienna’s Sophiensaal with motifs from works that were performed in the opera in the current season and had been heard in the concert hall.

There was criticism: “This piece of music gave the impression of artistic blasphemy… there must be a certain limit to which one can jokingly go…which no truly artistically cultivated person…should approach without reverence.” Nevertheless, this artists’ quadrille is amusing and original.
