Josef Strauss (1827-1870) Moulinet Polka / Mill-Polka, op. 57
Josef Strauss war Ingenieur, ehe er dem Wunsch der Mutter gehorchend, ins Walzergeschäft sei- ner Familie eintrat. Im Jahre 1851 hatte er den Bau einer Wehanlage im Triesting-Fluss in Nieder- österreich geleitet. Er kannte die kleinen Mühlen an den Ufern der Gewässer; sie wirkten roman- tisch-idyllisch für das Auge und waren nützlich für den Müller und die Bauern. Als Josef seine Polka mit dem Titel „Moulinet“ (kleine Mühle) skizzierte, kopierte er das Motiv des Mühlenrades mit seinem unbeirrbar gleichmässigen Gang, den er durch das Klopfen auf einem Holzblock nachge- ahmt haben wollte.
Die erste Aufführung der Polka fand am 25. Juli 1858 im Garten des Unger’schen Casinos in der Vorstadt Hernals statt und erregte Begeisterung. Die Musikverständigen erhielten eine aparte Ton- malerei und die Tanzlustigen eine Komposition, zu deren exakt eingehaltenen Rhythmen sie ihre fröhlichen Figuren ausführen konnten. Die Mühlen sind fast alle verschwunden, Josefs „kleine Mühle“ klappert immer noch.
Josef Strauss was an engineer before, following his mother’s wishes, he entered his family’s waltz business. In 1851 he had directed the construction of a weir system in the Triesting River in Lower Austria. He knew the little mills on the banks of the waters; they looked romantic and idyllic to the eye and were useful for the miller and the farmers. When Josef sketched his polka with the title “Moulinet” (little mill), he copied the motif of the mill wheel with its steadfastly steady pace, which he wanted to have imitated by knocking on a block of wood.
The first performance of the polka took place on July 25th, 1858 in the garden of the Unger’schen Casino in the suburb of Hernals and aroused enthusiasm. The musicians were given a distinctive tone painting and the dancers were given a composition, to whose precisely adhered rhythms they could perform their happy figures. The mills have almost all disappeared, Josef’s “little mill” is still rattling.
