Johann Strauss II (1825-1899) Nachtigall-Polka, op. 222 / Nightingale-Polka
Vor seiner Abreise zum Sommerengagement in Russland kündigte Johann Strauss für den 1. Mai 1859 im Ungers Casino in Hernals zu Wien sein Abschiedskonzert an. Es war zur Regel gewor- den, dass sich der elegante Musikdirektor jeweils mit einer Novität verabschiedete. Johann Strauss hatte diesmal ein Werk vorbereitet, das kein Tanz, sondern ein Charakterstück im Polka- Rhythmus war. Er hatte Freude daran, wie gschickt die virtuosen Bläser seines Orchesters mit ih- ren Trillern den Gesang der Nachtigallen nachahmten. Das Werk begeisterte das Publikum in Wien ebenso wie die Musikfreunde in Russland, die sich dieses Charakterstück immer wieder vor- spielen ließen.
Before leaving for his summer engagement in Russia, Johann Strauss announced his farewell concert on May 1, 1859 in the Ungers Casino in Hernals in Vienna. It had become the rule that the elegant music director said goodbye with a novelty. This time Johann Strauss had prepared a work that was not a dance, but a character piece in a polka rhythm. He enjoyed the skill of the virtuoso wind instruments of his orchestra with their trills imitating the singing of the nightingales. The work delighted the audience in Vienna as well as the music lovers in Russia, who had this character piece played over and over again.
