Andreas Leonhardt (1800-1866) Prinz Eugen-Marsch / Prince Eugen-March
1818 trat Leonhardt in die Kapelle des Infanterie-Regiments „Kaiser Alexander“ in Wien ein. Mit dem Regiment wurde er 1820 nach Neapel versetzt. Dort nahm er nebenbei Unterricht beim Direk- tor des Konservatoriums. Als das Regiment nach Prag verlegt wurde, bewarb er sich um die Stelle des Regimentskapellmeisters beim k. u. k. 27. Infanterie-Regiments, das 1829 nach Bo- logna verlegt wurde. Mit dem 27. Infanterie-Regiment kehrte er 1835 nach Graz zurück, wo er aus der Armee ausschied und die Stelle des Direktors des Musikvereins für die Steiermark übernahm. Als ihm 1850 die Aufgabe des k. u. k. Armee-Kapellmeisters angeboten wurde, ging er nach Wien und erwarb sich Verdienste um die Reorganisation des k. u. k. Militärmusikwe-
sens.
Das Lied Prinz Eugen, der edle Ritter beschreibt die Belagerung und Einnahme der Stadt Belgrad durch Eugen von Savoyen. Musikalisch ist das Lied mit seiner schwankenden Rhythmik unge- wöhnlich. Durch seine weite Verbreitung in der Bevölkerung hat das Prinz Eugen Lied verschie- dene weitere Lieder und musikalische Werke beeinflusst. Auch die Prinz-Eugen-Märsche von Jo- sef Strauss und Andreas Leonhardt, dessen Marsch dem k.k. Dragonerregiment Nr. 13 ‘Prinz Eu- gen von Savoyen’ gewidmet ist, übernahmen diese Melodie.
In 1818 Leonhardt entered the military band of the “Kaiser Alexander” infantry regiment in Vienna. With the regiment he was transferred to Naples in 1820. There he also took lessons from the direc- tor of the conservatory. When the regiment was relocated to Prague, he applied for the position of regimental conductor at the k. u. k. 27th Infantry Regiment, transferred to Bologna in 1829. With the 27th Infantry Regiment he returned to Graz in 1835, where he resigned from the army and took over the position of director of the music association for Styria. When he was given the task of k. u. k. Army Kapellmeister was offered, he went to Vienna and earned services to the reorganization of the k. u. k. Military music.
The song Prinz Eugen, the noble knight describes the siege and capture of the city of Belgrade by Eugene of Savoy. Musically, the song is unusual with its fluctuating rhythm. Due to its wide distri- bution among the population, the Prinz Eugen Lied influenced various other songs and musical works. Also the Prinz Eugen marches by Josef Strauss and Andreas Leonhardt, whose march was dedicated to the k.k. dragoon regiment No. 13 ‘Prince Eugene of Savoy’ dedicated, adopted this melody.
