L’Orfeo (Orpheus) ist eine Favola in Musica von Claudio Monteverdi. Bevor sich der Vorhang hebt, wird diese Toccata drei Mal gespielt;  der Inhalt der Oper ist eine freie Wiedergabe der griechischen Sage von Orpheus und Eurydike. Claudio Monteverdi, geboren in Cremona, erhielt eine Anstellung als Sänger und Violaspieler am Hofe der Adelsfamilie Gonzaga zu Mantua. Ab 1601 war er als Kapellmeister tätig. Als herzoglicher Hofkomponist bestanden seine Aufgaben nicht nur in der Aufsicht über die gesamte Kirchen- und Kammermusik bei Hofe, sondern auch in der musikalischen Ausgestaltung von Turnierspielen, Balletten, Schauspielen oder Konzerten. Anlässlich des Karnevals 1607 erhielt Monteverdi den Auftrag zur Oper L’Orfeo. Dieses Datum kann man heute als wahre Geburt der Oper ansehen. 1613 verließ Monteverdi Mantua und wurde maestro di cappella in San Marco in Venedig, was musikalisch eine hohe Auszeichnung darstellte.

L’Orfeo (Orpheus) is a Favola in Musica by Claudio Monteverdi. Before the curtain is raised, this Toccata is played three times; the content of the opera is a free rendering of the Greek saga of Orpheus and Eurydice. Claudio Monteverdi, born in Cremona, was employed as a singer and viola player at the court of the noble Gonzaga family in Mantua. From 1601 he worked as maestro di cappella. As court composer to the duke, his duties consisted not only in supervising all church and chamber music at court, but also in the musical arrangement of tournament plays, ballets, plays and concerts. On the occasion of the carnival in 1607, Monteverdi was commissioned to write the opera L’Orfeo. This date can now be seen as the true birth of opera. In 1613 Monteverdi left Mantua and became maestro di cappellain San Marco in Venice, which represented a high musical distinction.
