Ursprünglich wurde der Walzer für Männerchor und Orchester komponiert, weshalb eine Auffüh- rung ohne Chor mit einer wesentlich gekürzten Introduktion opportun erscheint. Die Urauffüh- rung des Walzers, dessen Titel von Martin Luther stammen soll, hatte größten Erfolg. In Wien war die Orchesterfassung des Walzers am 29. März 1869 bei einem Promenadenkonzert zu hö- ren, das die Brüder Strauss zu wohltätigen Zwecken in den Blumensälen der Gartenbaugesell- schaft veranstalteten. Bereits im Juli dieses Jahres fand eine Aufführung von „Wein, Weib und Gesang“ in New York statt, wodurch das Werk der ganzen Welt bekannt wurde.
The waltz was originally composed for male choir and orchestra, which is why a performance without a choir with a significantly shortened introduction seems opportune. The premiere of the waltz, the title of which is said to come from Martin Luther, was a great success. In Vienna, the orchestral version of the waltz was heard on March 29, 1869 at a promenade concert that the Strauss brothers organized for charitable purposes in the horticultural society’s flower halls. In July of this year, a performance of „Wine, Women and Singing” took place in New York, which made the work known all over the world.
