Franz Joseph Haydn, geboren in Rohrau, gestorben in Wien,war ein österreichischer Komponist der Wiener Klassik. Haydn verbrachte den größeren Teil seiner beruflichen Laufbahn als Hofmusiker auf dem Landsitz der wohlhabenden ungarischen Familie Esterházy, deren Orchester und Oper er leitete. Die Abgeschiedenheit von anderen Komponisten und musikalischen Strömungen beschrieb er mit den Worten: „Ich war von der Welt abgesondert, niemand in meiner Nähe konnte mich an mir selbst irremachen und quälen, und so musste ich original werden.“
Haydn zählt zu jenen großen Meistern der Tonkunst, die schon zu Lebzeiten höchstes Ansehen genossen haben und deren Bedeutung bis heute unumstritten ist. Dennoch haben Haydns originale Bläserwerke wie Feldpartiten – der Form nach mehrsätzige Divertimenti für drei bis vier Bläserpaare (Oboen, Hörner, Fagotte und ev. Klarinetten) – und Märsche bisher nicht die nötige Beachtung gefunden. Der zweite Satz aus der Feldpartita Hob.II:46 in B-Dur ist der hier bearbeitete St. Antoni Choral.
Franz Joseph Haydn, born in Rohrau, died in Vienna, was an Austrian composer of the Viennese classical period. Haydn spent the greater part of his professional career as a court musician at the country estate of the wealthy Hungarian Esterházy family, whose orchestra and opera he directed. He described the isolation from other composers and musical currents with the words: “I was separated from the world, nobody around me could mislead and torment me, and so I had to become original.”
Haydn is one of those great masters of musical art who enjoyed the highest esteem during their lifetime and whose importance is still undisputed today. Nevertheless, Haydn’s original wind works such as field partitas – divertimenti in several movements for three to four pairs of wind instruments (oboes, horns, bassoons and possibly clarinets) – and marches have so far not received the necessary attention.
