A fanfare is a festive trumpet signal that plays the notes of a triad, such as the fanfare in Fidelio or Carmen. In earlier times, almost every city had its own distinctive fanfare, for example, the incomplete fanfare in the church tower of Krakow. The “Academic Fanfare” presented here, in 8- or 6-part form in the key of C or B-flat for trumpets, horn, trombones, and tuba, was often performed by the Vienna Artists’ Ensemble for the entrance of the Academic Senate at a formal ceremony.
