Johann Strauss I (1804-1849) Moldau-Klänge, Walzer, op.186 / Moldau-Sounds, Waltz

Die sechste Reise von Johann Strauss Vater mit seinem Orchester-Personal aus 25 Musikern war eine längere Konzertreise, die von Mitte November 1845 zunächst nach Prag führte. Sicherlich hatte die kürzlich durch die Eröffnung der Strecke von Olmütz nach Prag geschlossene Eisen- bahnverbindung von Wien bis Prag mit der Reiseplanung zu tun und sicher nahm Strauss auch die Eisenbahn bis nach Prag. Am 15. Oktober 1845 war Strauss jedenfalls „auf der Durchreise“ und auf einer Soirée in Prag, bei der er seinen Walzer „Moldau-Klänge“ uraufführte. Über die nächsten Stationen der Reise, nämlich Reichenberg, Zittau, Dresden, Leipzig und Magdeburg wissen wir nicht viel. Am 28. Oktober erreichte die Reisegruppe Berlin, wo die Veranstaltungen meist im Kroll ́schen Wintergarten stattfanden. Strauss wollte auf der Rückreise nach Wien erneut Prag be- suchen und dort am 20. November eine musikalische Soirée geben, die aber deshalb ausfallen musste, weil Diebe die Mundstücke der Blasinstrumente der Kapelle gestohlen haben. Die ersteWiener Aufführung der „Moldau-Klänge“, die aus Introduction, 5 Walzern mit Coda bestehen, fand am 11. Juni 1846 beim Eröffnungsball Im Sperl statt.

Johann Strauss’ father’s sixth trip with his orchestra staff made up of 25 musicians was a long con- cert tour that initially led to Prague from mid-November 1845. Certainly that had something to do with travel planning with the opening of the railway connection from Vienna to Prague recently, and Strauss certainly also took the train to Prague. In any case, on October 15, 1845, Strauss was “passing through” and at a soirée in Prague, where he premiered his waltz “Moldau Sounds”. We don’t know much about the next stops on the journey, namely Reichenberg, Zittau, Dresden, Leip- zig and Magdeburg. On October 28th the tour group reached Berlin, where the events mostly took place in Kroll’s winter garden. On the way back to Vienna, Strauss wanted to visit Prague again and give a musical soirée there on November 20, but this had to be canceled because thieves stole the mouthpieces of the band’s wind instruments. The first Viennese performance of the “Mol- dau-Klänge”, which consists of an introduction, 5 waltzes with coda, took place on June 11, 1846 at the opening ball in the Sperl.
