Das musikalische Schlachtengemälde, Bataglia (von ital. battaglia, dt. Schlacht) ist eine Gattung der Programmmusik und stellt den Kampf konkurrierender Armeen, Gruppen oder Personen musikalisch dar. Es enthält meist zahlreiche Instrumentaleffekte, so die Fanfaren als Schlachtenrufe der Blechbläser und gegebenenfalls ein erweitertes Schlaginstrumentarium zur Imitation von Schüssen und Kanonensalven. Das Schlachtengemälde steht bis zum 18. Jh. im Zusammenhang mit höfischen Zeremoniellen. Auch einfachere Instrumentalkompositionen, die programmatisch kriegerische Handlungen, Schlachten usw. schildern, wurden als Battaglia bezeichnet.
The musical battle painting, Bataglia (from ital. Battaglia, engl. Battle) is a genre of program music and musically depicts the struggle of competing armies, groups or people. It usually contains numerous instrumental effects, such as the fanfares as battle cries of the brass and, if necessary, an extended set of percussion instruments for imitating shots and cannon salvos. Up until the 18th century, the battle painting was associated with courtly ceremonies. Even simpler instrumental compositions that programmatically depict warlike acts, battles, etc., were referred to as battaglia.
