Johann Strauss I (1804-1849) Beliebte Sperl Polka, op.133 / Popular Sperl Polka
Der Sperl-Saal war für die Musikgeschichte Wiens von großer Bedeutung. 1807 eröffnete Johann Georg Scherzer, der mit der Enkelin des Bürgers Sperlbauer verheiratet war, dieses große Etablisse- ment, kurz „Sperl“ genannt. „Es war an einem jener Tage, da Sperl in floribus erglänzte. Der ganze Garten Sperls in der Leopoldstadt leuchtete in tausend Lampen. Alle Säle sind geöffnet und in der Mitte des Gartens steht der moderne Held Österreichs, der Musikdirektor Johann Strauss.“ (Heinrich Laube). Für den Carneval 1842 entstand „Im Sperl“ ein zusätzlicher Saal im griechischen Stil mit Terassen der sowohl im Winter wie auch im Sommer genutzt werden konnte. Der Karneval 1842 war mit 4 Wochen extrem kurz, am 8. Februar war bereits Faschings-Dienstag. „Im Sperl“ war mit Aus- nahme der Freitage jeden Tag ein Ballfest und die Musik war stets unter der persönlichen Direction des Herrn Johann Strauss. Für den ersten Roccoco-Ball und zur Feier der Eröffnung des neuen Saa- les komponierte Strauss die „Sperl-Polka“ sein opus 133.
The Sperl Hall was of great importance for the history of music in Vienna. In 1807 Johann Georg Scherzer, who was married to the granddaughter of the citizen Sperlbauer, opened this large estab- lishment, called “Sperl” for short. “It was on one of those days when Sperl shone in floribus. The whole garden of Sperl in Leopoldstadt shone in a thousand lamps. All halls are open and the modern hero of Austria, the music director Johann Strauss, stands in the middle of the garden.” (Heinrich Laube). For the Carneval in 1842, “Im Sperl” was an additional hall in the Greek style with terraces that could be used both in winter and in summer. The Carnival in 1842 was extremely short at 4 weeks, on February 8th it was already Mardi Gras Tuesday. With the exception of Fridays, “Im Sperl” was a ball festival and the music was always under the personal direction of Mr. Johann Strauss. For the first Roccoco Ball and to celebrate the opening of the new hall, Strauss composed the “Sperl Polka”, his opus 133.
