Giovanni Croce, geboren in Chioggia, gestorben in Venedig war ein italienischer Komponist, Kapellmeister und Priester der venezianischen Renaissance. Er wirkte ab 1565 als Chorknabe und Sänger, ab 1594 als Vizekapellmeister und von 1603 bis 1609 als Kapellmeister am Markusdom in Venedig. Er war bedeutend für die Entwicklung des konzertierenden Stils der venezianischen Schule. Er komponierte u. a. Madrigale, Kanzonetten, Motetten, Messen und Orgelmusik. Durch eine in der Mitte der 1590er Jahre geschlossene Bekanntschaft mit John Dowland fanden seine Werke in England Verbreitung.
Giovanni Croce, born in Chioggia, died in Venice was an Italian composer, conductor and priest of the Venetian Renaissance. He worked as a choirboy and singer from 1565, from 1594 as Vice Kapellmeister and from 1603 to 1609 as Kapellmeister at St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice. It was important for the development of the concert style of the Venetian school. He composed among other things madrigals, canzonets, motets, masses and organ music. Through an acquaintance with John Dowland made in the mid-1590s, his works found dissemination in England.
