Johann Strauss II (1825-1899) Künstlerleben, Walzer, op. 316 / Artist’s Life, Waltz

Nach der Niederlage bei Königgrätz im Juli 1866 standen die Tanzkapellmeister Wiens vor der Aufgabe, mit neuen Kompositionen jene Heiterkeit heraufzubeschwören, die sich einstmals im Wiener Fasching eingestellt hatte. Mit seiner brillanten Walzerpartie „Künstlerleben“ – aufgeführt beim Ballfest am 18. Februar 1867 im Dianasaal zu Wien – gelang Johann Strauss ein Meister- werk, die Wien noch einmal zur „Stadt der Tänzer und Geiger“ (nach Anton Wildgans) werden ließ.

Mit dem Bau des Dianabades 1808 brach eine neue Ära für die Wiener Bäderlandschaft an. Beim Umbau 1843 errichteten die Architekten eine gedeckte Schwimmhalle, für Europa eine Neuheit. Da der Badebetrieb im Winter nicht wirtschaftlich zu führen war, fand die Schwimmhalle in dieser Zeit als Ballsaal Verwendung. Das Bassin wurde überdeckt und diente als Tanzfläche. Die Eröff- nung des Dianasaals fand am 12. November 1860 mit der Diana-Polka von Josef Strauss statt, am 15. Februar 1867 erklang hier der Donauwalzer zum ersten Mal.

After the defeat at Königgrätz in July 1866, Vienna’s dance bandmasters were faced with the task of conjuring up that cheerfulness with new compositions that had once set in at the Vienna Carni- val. With his brilliant waltz part “Artist’s Life” – performed at the Ballfest on February 18, 1867 in the Dianasaal in Vienna – Johann Strauss achieved a masterpiece that once again made Vienna the “city of dancers and violinists” (after Anton Wildgans).

With the construction of the Diana bath in 1808, a new era dawned for the Viennese bathing land- scape. During the renovation in 1843, the architects built a covered swimming pool, a novelty for Europe. Since the swimming pool was not economically viable in winter, the swimming pool was used as a ballroom during this time. The pool was covered and served as a dance floor. The open- ing of the Dianasaal took place on November 12th, 1860 with the Diana Polka by Josef Strauss, on February 15, 1867, the Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss sounded here for the first time.
