Andrew Lloyd Webber, in London geboren, ist der erfolgreichste Musical-Komponist der Gegenwart; seine Werke wurden teilweise über Jahrzehnte an vielen bekannten Plätzen aufgeführt. Seine Hits wie Don’t Cry for Me Argentina aus dem Stück Evita oder Memory aus dem Musical Cats wurden weltweit gesielt. Eine bekannte Filmadaption ist auch Jesus Christ Superstar. Cats ist ein Musical von A. L. Webber mit Texten von T. S. Eliot. Eliots Gedicht von „Grizabella, the glamour cat“, also die vereinsamte und ausgeschlossene ehemalige Glamour-Katze, brachte Webber auf die Idee, dem ganzen Werk eine durchgehende Handlung zu unterlegen – die es bei Eliot nicht gibt – und ein Musical daraus zu machen, in dem Grizabella die Hauptrolle spielen würde. Er begann seine Songs für diesen neuen Zweck umzuschreiben. Im Verlauf der Proben zur Uraufführung kam es zu einer entscheidenden Ergänzung. Da die Dramaturgie des Stückes einen emotionalen Höhepunkt benötige, komponierte Webber das Stück Memory („Erinnerung“), das schließlich zu einem internationalen Hit wurde. Cats mit dem Lied Memory zählt zu den erfolgreichsten Musicals aller Zeiten.

His hits such as Don’t Cry for Me Argentina from the play Evita or Memory from the musical Cats have been performed worldwide. Another well-known film adaptation is Jesus Christ Superstar. Cats is a musical by A. L. Webber with lyrics by T. S. Eliot. Eliot’s poem about “Grizabella, the glamour cat”, the lonely and excluded former glamour cat, gave Webber the idea of giving the whole work a continuous plot – which Eliot does not have – and making a musical out of it in which Grizabella would play the main role. He began to rewrite his songs for this new purpose. During the rehearsals for the premiere, a crucial addition was made. Since the dramaturgy of the piece required an emotional climax, Webber composed the piece Memory, which eventually became an international hit. Cats with the song Memory is one of the most successful musicals of all time.
