Henry Mancinis Schwerpunkte liegt im Bereich der Filmmusik. Mancinis Eltern waren Italoamerikaner, die Henry dazu brachten, Flöte zu lernen, wodurch er in der Einwanderer-Folklore-Band musizieren konnte. Henry besuchte die renommierte Juilliard School of Music in New York. Mancinis große Leidenschaft waren Big Band, Swing und Jazz. 1946 schloss sich Mancini der neu formierten Glenn-Miller-Band an. Er erweiterte seine Kompositions- und Tonsatzkenntnisse und kreierte einen unverwechselbaren eigenen Stil, der sich durch große Leichtigkeit und oft verblüffende Einfachheit und Klarheit auszeichnet. Der Erfolg von Mancinis Bearbeitungen für die Filme Die Glenn Miller Story und Die Benny Goodman Story eröffnete ihm die Möglichkeit neue Musikstile einzuführen. Bekannt sind auch die Filmmusiken zu Der rosarote Panther oder das Thema der Krimiserie Peter Gunn. Das Lied Moon River stammt aus dem Film Frühstück bei Tiffany. Mancinis Sinn für feinste Klangnuancen, verbunden mit einem Gespür für elegante melodische Linien, machten ihn zu einem herausragenden Filmkomponisten.

The success of Mancini’s arrangements for the films The Glenn Miller Story and The Benny Goodman Story gave him the opportunity to introduce new styles of music. The film music for The Pink Panther and the theme for the crime series Peter Gunn are also well known. The song Moon River comes from the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Mancini’s sense for the finest sound nuances, combined with a feeling for elegant melodic lines, made him an outstanding film composer.
