Zunächst wollte Gershwin seine Komposition “American Rhapsody” nennen. Der Vorschlag zu “Rhapsody in Blue” kam von seinem Bruder Ira, der Name spielt auf die “Blue Notes” an, ein wichtiges Merkmal der Jazzmusik. Gershwin baut sie in seine Musik ebenso ein, wie die für den Blues so charakteristischen, swingenden Rhythmen. Die “Rhapsody in Blue” enthält drei große Kadenzen für das Klavier. Die Uraufführung am 12. Februar 1924 in New York, bei der Gershwin selbst den Solopart spielte, schrieb Geschichte. Gershwin initially wanted to call his composition “American Rhapsody.” The suggestion for “Rhapsody in Blue” came from his brother Ira; the name alludes to the “blue notes,” an important feature of jazz music. Gershwin incorporates them into his music, as well as the swinging rhythms so characteristic of the blues. Gershwin chose the form of a rhapsody, which has no predetermined pattern.
