Jeremiah Clarke (1684-1707) / Henry Purcell (1659-1695) Trumpet Tune
J. Clarke wurde 1685 erstmals als Chorknabe an der Royal Chapell erwähnt; 1692 wurde wegen Stimmbruchs entlassen. Im gleichen Jahr wurde er Organist am Winchester College, diese Stelle hatte er bis 1695 inne. 1699 wurde er zum vicar choral an der St. Paul’s Cathedral ernannt, wo er auch als Organist tätig war. Als Komponist wie als Organist war er ein bedeutender Komponist des englischen Barocks. H. Purcell wurde 1659 in Westminster geboren. Vor seinem zehnten Geburtstag wurde er Mitglied der Chapel Royal und erhielt seine Ausbildung als Chorknabe. Im Jahr 1673 erfolgte Purcells Stimmbruch, sodass er aus dem Knabenchor ausschied. 1679 übernahm Purcell die Organistenstelle an der Westminster Abbey, 1682 wurde er als Organist an der Chapel Royal angestellt.1695 starb Purcell und wurde in der Westminser Abbey neben der Orgel zu den Klängen seiner eigenen Musik begraben. Purcells Rang als Komponist ist unbestritten für die englische Musik, er gilt er als das Genie seiner Zeit. J. Clarke konnte als Komponist des Prince of Denmark March identifiziert werden, jenes Musikstücks, das lange Zeit unter Trumpet Voluntary fälschlicherweise Henry Purcell zugeschrieben wurde. Trumpet Tune, das früher ebenfalls Henry Purcell zugeschrieben wurde, entstammt einer musikalischen Gemeinschaftsarbeit von J. Clarke und Daniel Purcell, Henry Purcells jüngerem Bruder.
J. Clarke was first recorded as a chorister at the Royal Chapel in 1685; in 1692, he was dismissed due to a broken voice. In the same year, he became organist at Winchester College, a position he held until 1695. In 1699, he was appointed vicar choral at St. Paul’s Cathedral, where he also served as organist. As both a composer and organist, he was an important composer of the English Baroque period. H. Purcell was born in Westminster in 1659. Before his tenth birthday, he became a member of the Chapel Royal and trained as a chorister. In 1673, Purcell’s voice broke, and he left the boys’ choir. In 1679, Purcell took over the position of organist at Westminster Abbey, and in 1682 he was appointed organist at the Chapel Royal. Purcell died in 1695 and was buried in Westminster Abbey next to the organ to the sounds of his own music. Purcell’s stature as a composer is undisputed in English music; he is considered the genius of his time. J. Clarke has been identified as the composer of the Prince of Denmark March, the piece of music long erroneously attributed to Henry Purcell under the name Trumpet Voluntary. Trumpet Tune, also previously attributed to Henry Purcell, is a musical collaboration between J. Clarke and Daniel Purcell, Henry Purcell’s younger brother.
